School Rules

Our School Rules

  • At Oakfield, we foster a culture of positive behaviour reinforcement, encouraging children to make good choices. We celebrate their achievements by providing public praise and addressing any challenges privately.
  • Children earn individual points for their positive behaviour. These points contribute to a class prize, encouraging students to appreciate and support each other's accomplishments rather than feeling disheartened by personal setbacks.
  • Together with our pupils, we simplified our school rules to ensure clarity and comprehension for everyone. We have five essential rules that apply to students, staff, and visitors alike.
  • If your child experiences any ongoing behavioural challenges, we will collaborate with you to provide the necessary support. We maintain a record of behavioural incidents and will share this information with you via email following a phone call. This process enables us to work closely with you and identify any recurring patterns.
  • Please note that we respect the privacy of each child and will not disclose specific consequences or details of incidents involving other children to parents.

Our Rules

At Oakfield, we believe that a positive learning environment is crucial for the holistic development of our students. Our behaviour policy, inspired by the work of Paul Dix and supported by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) research, is designed to promote and maintain high standards of behaviour while ensuring the well-being of all members of our school community.

At the core of our policy are the principles of consistency, fairness, relationships, and expectations. We strive to establish clear expectations for behaviour and apply rules and consequences fairly and consistently across the school. We believe that treating all students equitably and ensuring that consequences are proportionate to the behaviour fosters a sense of fairness and respect among our pupils. Building strong, positive relationships between staff, pupils, and parents is vital, as it encourages open communication and supports the development of a nurturing learning environment. We also set high expectations for behaviour and learning, empowering our pupils to take responsibility for their actions.

Our approach is underpinned by several effective strategies backed by EEF research. We explicitly teach behavioural expectations, model appropriate behaviour, and reinforce positive behaviours through praise and rewards. Our staff receive effective classroom management training to support implementing routines and procedures that promote a positive learning atmosphere.

Social and emotional learning is integral to our approach, as we teach students about emotions, empathy, and self-regulation, providing opportunities for them to practice these skills.

We also engage in regular monitoring and feedback, as well as collaborative problem-solving, to address any behaviour concerns.

In order to maintain a supportive and inclusive environment, we have a hierarchy of consequences that are applied in a fair and consistent manner. This ranges from verbal warnings to, in severe cases, to suspension or exclusion. Our school also employs restorative practices to ensure that children have access to the necessary support for their behavioural and emotional needs.

The success of our behaviour policy relies on the collective efforts of our staff, students, and parents/guardians. Staff members are responsible for implementing and modelling the policy, communicating expectations and consequences, and collaborating with colleagues and parents. Pupils are expected to follow the behaviour policy and treat others with respect and kindness, while parents/guardians play a vital role in supporting the policy and promoting positive behaviour at home.

We are committed to continuously monitoring and evaluating our behaviour policy. By collecting data on behaviour incidents and interventions and regularly reviewing the policy, we can make data-driven decisions to adapt and improve our approach. At Oakfield, we are dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
